Confirmation is a sacrament whereby a youth affirms for him/herself the vows made by their Godparents at Baptism. It is also available for adults who have never been confirmed or people from other denominations desiring to become fully part of the Episcopal Church.
If an adult has been confirmed in another denomination, the ceremony of Reception takes place which recognizes the validity of his or her previous Confirmation, and also serves as an official welcome into the Episcopal Church.
Adults often inquire about Confirmation when they feel a desire to learn more about the Episcopal Church, or delve deeper into topics of spirituality or the Christian faith. Preparing adults for Confirmation or Reception is done during a series of Inquirers Classes which are offered each year.
Attending classes in no way obligates any youth or adult to follow through with Confirmation or Reception. The classes are considered to be exploration, and a decision to participate in the ceremony itself is made prior to the ceremony at the Cathedral.
Confirmations and the reception ceremony are held in the spring at Trinity & St. Phillip’s Cathedral in Newark, where our candidates join the youth and adults of other churches in a large celebration.
